Lapband & Food

People must change their diets after Lap-Band surgery

Lap-Band surgery (adjustable gastric banding) involves placing a silicone band around the stomach to limit how much food a person can eat. After Lap-Band surgery, people must change their diets.

Post-op Diet

Immediately after Lap-Band surgery, doctors and dietitians usually recommend people stick to a liquid diet for a week or two. Then patients can advance to a diet of pureed foods for another week or two, followed by a soft food diet for several more weeks.

Protein Drinks

Doctors and dietitians often recommend protein drinks for patients after Lap-Band surgery. People may have trouble getting enough protein after surgery, especially while on a liquid diet, and protein drinks make up for what they aren't getting from food.

Long-term Diet

The long-term diet for people with lap bands includes most foods in moderation. However, if people with lap bands eat lots of fatty, sugary foods they will most likely not lose all the weight they want to lose or they may regain weight.

Slider Foods

Certain foods are known as "slider foods" because they slide through the band easily. Slider foods include things like ice cream, milkshakes, pudding, yogurt and soups. People with Lap-Bands need to be cautious about eating these foods because they can easily eat too much of them.

Drinking With Meals

Doctors and dietitians advise people with Lap-Bands not to drink with meals because the liquid can turn solid foods into slider foods and then they can eat too much. In addition, drinking with meals can wash food out of the stomach too quickly, causing people to get hungry again too soon.
