Is It Safe To Lose Weight With Lipo B12 Injections

Some people use dietary supplements in an effort to lose weight.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2008, 34 percent of Americans older than 20 were overweight. Many individuals turn to dietary supplements to aid in their weight loss endeavors. Lipo B-12 injections are promoted by certain diet clinics as a useful tool in weight reduction.

Identification

Lipo B-12 injections are a combination of vitamin B-12, and a blend of three amino acids referred to as "lipotropics." This composite is prescribed by some weight-loss clinics to aid individuals with weight reduction. It is administered by an intramuscular injection.

Safety Issues

Clinics that prescribe Lipo B-12 shots, such as The Skin Care Science Institute and the Urban Solutions Medspa and Laser Centers, state they are safe and do not interfere with other medications. According to the Sohoba Medical Group, there are no safety issues concerning the use of Lipo B-12 injections for weight loss, provided the client is under the supervision of a licensed health-care professional. According to Mayo Clinic nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky, there is no evidence that B-12 shots are harmful. There's also no evidence that they work, she adds.

Considerations

As of August 2010, Lipo B-12 injections are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss. Before trying any new diet or exercise program, seek advice from a health care provider.
