Signs & Symptoms of Extreme Fatigue
Extreme fatigue is a general term used to describe when a person feels overwhelmingly tired along with a variety of other symptoms. The cause of the extreme fatigue may simply be due to inactivity, though prolonged fatigue is typically rooted in a disease process, such as depression, anemia, pregnancy or hypothyroidism. You should consult your physician if you experience extreme fatigue that does not subside.
Lethargy
The primary symptom of extreme fatigue is intense lethargy. The lethargy may be so pronounced that you may be unable to sustain the activities required for daily living, such as preparing food, tending to personal hygiene needs and regularly attending school or work. Lethargy may manifest itself as physical weakness or mental fogginess.
Inability to Concentrate
Concentrating requires a great deal of mental energy and focus, which can be nearly impossible for someone with extreme fatigue. Inability to concentrate can lead to everyday activities getting overlooked, such as paying bills and sending holiday cards.
Excessive Sleep
Sleeping 10 hours or more per night can be a symptom of extreme fatigue. This is due to the overwhelming physical and mental weakness and lethargy. Some people with extreme fatigue are unable to leave their beds for the majority of their days, which is one of the culprits of excessive sleep.
Changes in Appetite
It is common for a person with extreme fatigue to have an unusual appetite. Sometimes the appetite will greatly increase and other times it will dramatically decrease. This can lead to noticeable weight loss or weight gain.
