Laptop Screen Troubleshooting

Laptop Screen Troubleshooting

Laptops are incredibly convenient because of their sleek design and ease of portability, but they can become a real pain when they stop working properly. The screen of a laptop is the component that will fail most easily and cause the most frustration. There are several easy troubleshooting steps you can attempt on your own before considering repair or replacement.

Instructions

1. Complete the basic troubleshooting steps first, such as checking the battery level to make sure the laptop isn't dead and looking at the bottom of the laptop to see if the battery is plugged in properly.

2. Turn the laptop off and then back on; then try removing and replacing the battery to see if the screen will appear properly after a system restart.

3. Examine the button on the side or back of the laptop that depresses when the lid is closed. Make sure that it isn't stuck or broken off, which would cause the laptop screen to remain off even when the lid is opened.

4. Connect an external monitor to the laptop and see if your desktop appears on the monitor. Restart the computer and access the system settings by pressing the "F2" button when the operating system is loading. Go into the BIOS and check to see if the laptop is stuck in hibernate mode and needs to be manually changed.

5. Roll back any recent changes you've made to the laptop, such as downloading new drivers or installing new software, by loading a system restore point or completely reformatting your hard drive.

6. If the laptop screen still isn't displaying properly after completing all of the above steps, send the laptop back to the manufacturer to check for graphics card, fan or processor hardware failure.
