Orthopedists perform amputations, and corrective surgeries related to hip problems; orthopedists also treat conditions like bone infections, and pain associated with the knees, back or shoulders. According to the Mayo Clinic Department of Orthopedic Surgery, numerous advances have been made in the field of orthopedics through cutting-edge research, and clinical trials in every aspect of musculoskeletal pathology.
International Bone Research Association (IBRA)
Based in Basel Switzerland, IBRA is a relatively new organization that provides funding for research in orthopedics. Due to limited funds, the IBRA solicits proposals for bone research. Applicants must focus their research on topics that are related to bone biology and the improvement or development of internal fixation devices for maxillofacial hand and spine surgery. Applications are accepted twice a year, in January and September. The goal of the grant is to assist professionals who are recent graduates with financial support to advance research in their area of specialization. Candidates must have an MD, a DMD or equivalent.

American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM)
The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine awards the Young Investor Grant to recent orthopedic professionals who seek to conduct pilot projects. AOSSM will provide "seed money" in the amount of $40,000 to candidates who seek to further their research in sports medicine. Applicants can also be residents, fellows and early career orthopedic surgeons. The investigating team should include at least one AOSSM member. Other grants awarded by AOSSM include the Sandy Kirkley Clinical Outcome Research Grant, which is awarded to one applicant per year in the amount of $20,000. The grant is specifically for conducting clinical trials to investigate the efficacy of interventions in orthopedic sports medicine.

National Marfan Foundation (NMF)
Based in Port Washington, New York, The Marfan Foundation awards grants for investigative research on any aspect of Marfan syndrome, a disorder of the connective tissue. The foundation is particularly interested in areas that address cardiovascular, genetic, orthopedic and ophthalmologic conditions related to Marfan syndrome. Applicants can request between $50,000 to $100,000 in grant funding for research that can run between one to two years. NMF also awards the Victor A. McKusick Fellowship to Ph.d's and medical doctors. The grant is designed to support promising researchers and scientists in their efforts to advance research in disorders related to Marfan syndrome. Ph.D's will receive up to $50,000 and medical doctors will receive $75,000.
