Minnesota Medicaid can provide a financial boost to state residents.
The Medical Assistance program provides health coverage for more than 500,000 residents of Minnesota every month, according to the Minnesota Department of Human Services. The program is Minnesota's version of Medicaid and is funded jointly with state and federal dollars. To qualify for Minnesota's Medicaid, you will have to meet a strict set of eligibility requirements. These requirements vary depending on your age, income levels, and existing health insurance coverage. Those who apply properly, though, can receive a much-needed supplement to their regular insurance coverage.
Families with Children under 21
Families with children under 21 must meet certain income regulations if they wish to sign up for Minnesota Medicaid. These requirements vary depending on a family's size and location, but, as an example, a family of three cannot make more than $4,198 in gross monthly income and still qualify for Minnesota Medicaid.
Families may have to pay a monthly premium for Medicaid, depending on their income levels. It's best for state residents to check the website of the Minnesota Department of Human Services (see References) to determine what monthly fee, if any, their family would pay for Minnesota Medicaid.
Pregnant Women
Pregnant women may also qualify for Medicaid, depending on their gross monthly income levels. Unlike other residents, though, pregnant women do not have to meet any asset limit requirements to qualify for Medicaid coverage.
After giving birth, these women may still qualify for Medicaid programs that serve parents. The Minnesota Department of Human Services will review the applications of pregnant women to determine if they still qualify for Medicaid coverage.
People over 65
The Minnesota Medicaid eligibility rules are slightly different for people over 65. Again, it's best for senior citizens to check the eligibility rules on the website of the Minnesota Department of Human Services (see References) to determine whether their gross monthly income level is low enough to qualify for Medicaid assistance. This income level changes depending on a person's age and with whom the senior citizen is living.
For most people over 65, Medicaid coverage requires no monthly premiums. Most seniors will simply have to make a co-payment at doctor visits and when seeking medical attention.
