Recovery Time From Lap Gallbladder Surgery

Removal of the gallbladder is just as serious as any other surgery. If you chose to have laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, healing times may vary by person and situation, but the recovery time will most likely be shorter than with conventional gallbladder surgery.

Recovery time for gall bladder surgery may vary.

Procedure

According to the laparoscopic.md website, the lap gallbladder surgery is executed by cutting several tiny areas in the abdomen and inserting a camera. Once the doctor finds the gallbladder within the abdomen, it is cut away and removed.

Benefits of Recovery Time

The greatest benefit of having a lap gallbladder surgery is a shorter recovery time. Most people can return to work within a few days, which is well before they would have with a conventional gallbladder surgery. The incisions heal quickly with little to no pain. This is because when a laparoscope is used to remove the gall bladder, your abdomen muscles do not have to be cut, according to laparoscopic.md.

Time In Hospital

Since you are not essentially being cut open, this surgery can be completed as an outpatient procedure. When your surgery is complete--and there are no complications--you may be able to go home that day or within one to two days, according to laparoscopic.md.

Recovering After Your Surgery

Once you return home after your surgery, you will be in bed a day or day at the maximum. According to the Aurora Healthcare website, you should be recovered from your surgery within three days. At this point, your liver will take over the gallbladder's job and you can return to a normal diet and lifestyle.

Possible Complications

Having complications may extend the healing time. These complications can consist of "bleeding, infection and injury to the duct (tube) that carries bile from your gallbladder to your stomach," according to laparoscopic.md. Although these complications are rare, if they do occur, your recovery time may be longer.
