Recovery Time For Hip Surgery

Recovery Time for Hip Surgery

Your recovery time following hip surgery will depend on the type of surgery you had. For example, a total hip replacement will require significantly more recovery time than hip resurfacing surgery.

Surgery Types

There are several surgical options to restore your hip. They include the traditional cemented and cementedless total hip replacement, the newer hybrid total hip replacement, partial hip replacement and hip resurfacing.

Hospital Stay

Your hospital stay will depend upon your surgery type. Patients undergoing hip resurfacing usually stay a maximum of two days while patients undergoing a total hip replacement stay longer, up to five days.

Full Recovery

You can expect full recovery after half a year. According to National Institutes of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, "Full recovery from the surgery takes about 3 to 6 months, depending on the type of surgery, your overall health, and the success of your rehabilitation."

Faster Recovery

Prepare up to a year in advance for your hip surgery and your recovery will be speedier. Patients who strengthen the muscles around the hip such as the abdomen, buttocks and legs have been known to recuperate faster.

Mental Preparation

Patients must be mentally prepared before undergoing surgery. Recovery time may be extremely painful and longer than they had expected--even for those who are very fit.
