Realize Lap Band Vs Allergen Lap Band

Realize Lap Band Vs. Allergen Lap Band

The Allergen Lap-Band System and the Realize Band by Ethicon are two different types of adjustable gastric bands available for use in the U.S. The two types of bands both work by sectioning off the upper portion of the stomach to create a small pouch.

Bands Available

Ethicon offers two different bands: the Realize Band and the Realize Band-C, which allows for greater adjustability. Both bands are the same size. The Allergen Lap-Band System is available in two different sizes.

Adjustability

The Lap-Band APL System claims to offer the greatest range of adjustability of all bands on the market (www.lapband.com). The Realize Band and the Realize Band-C use a low-pressure balloon system to avoid tissue damage during adjustments.

Access ports

The Lap-Band System offers two different sizes of access ports, which are attached with sutures. The Realize injection port has a lower profile than both Lap-Band ports and is placed without the use of sutures.

Patient support

Ethicon offers patients the Realize mySUCCESS web-based support program, which helps patients develop healthy habits before and after surgery. Allergen's My Lap-Band Journey online support tool also provides pre- and post-surgical guidance.

Risks

Risks associated with both procedures include nausea and vomiting, band slippage or leakage, port-site infection, and blockage of the stomach outlet.
