Safety Of Plastic Pet Food Dishes

Plastic pet food dishes can pose a health risk to the animals who eat from them. If you don't want to take a chance, there are a variety of alternatives that may be safer for your pets.

Chemicals

Bisphenol A is a chemical found in plastic bottles and containers that may be dangerous. According to Whiner & Diner, colorants and phthalates, substances added to plastic to make it more flexible and durable, also may be unhealthy.

Leakage

If a plastic pet dish gets scratched or damaged, chemicals or by-products from the materials can leak into the contents; namely the pet's food and water supply.

Health Issues

The National Institutes of Health reports that long-term exposure to bisphenol A can affect the brain and behavior.

Allergies

Some pets are allergic to plastic materials and just being near the material can cause problems such as skin allergies. Plastic is porous and has a tendency to harbor germs, odor and dirt.

Alternatives

Safe products for pet dishes include ceramic or stoneware. Stainless steel is the most durable of all options. These are less porous and decrease the likelihood of bacteria growth.
