Pregnancy Diet Restrictions

Pregnancy Diet Restrictions

Pregnant women need to carefully watch their diets. Certain foods should be avoided completely during pregnancy because of bacteria or substances that can cause complications in the pregnancy.

Fish with Mercury

According to the American Pregnancy Association, fish with high levels of mercury, such as shark and swordfish, should be avoided during pregnancy. Mercury has been shown to cause developmental delays and brain damage.

Raw Foods

Pregnant women should not eat any raw or undercooked foods. Raw shellfish, including oysters and mussels, should be avoided. In addition, foods made with raw eggs, such as cookie dough, should be eliminated from the pregnancy diet because of the risk of salmonella.

Soft Cheeses

Soft cheeses, including blue cheese, feta, and brie, should be avoided during pregnancy. According to the American Pregnancy Association, these cheeses may contain the bacteria known as listeria, which has been linked to miscarriages.

Deli Meats

Deli meats may also be contaminated with listeria. Unless reheated until steaming, all deli meats should be avoided throughout the pregnancy.

Alcohol

Alcohol is not safe during pregnancy, regardless of the amount. The American Pregnancy Association states that alcohol consumption can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome in the fetus.
