Warts are a very common ailment. Luckily, there are many wart treatments, from homemade remedies and over-the-counter medications to prescription ointments. Finding the best solution for a wart problem may take some time, but in the end you'll have a treatment for when a pesky wart pops up.
Salicylic Acid
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, salicylic acid is one of the best medicines to use on a wart. It is available over the counter in many different brands and may be found in the form of a gel or cream. Apply it daily to your wart for a period of weeks, or until the wart is gone. Salicylic acid causes skin to peel from the wart, gradually wearing the wart away until it is gone.
Duct Tape
Duct tape is one of the oldest and most common forms of wart removal, and it is a convenient remedy because many people already have duct tape in their home. To use this solution, put duct tape on your wart and leave it in place for at least two days. The duct tape may be re-applied as needed. After the two days are up, file down the wart by using a nail file or an emery board. The duct tape then may be applied again, if necessary, and the process repeated until the wart is gone.
Cantharidin
A doctor can prescribe the medication Cantharidin to help with the treatment of a wart. Placed on a wart, Cantharidin causes the wart to blister and peel away. This treatment takes only a few hours. While Cantharidin usually requires only one dose, a doctor may re-apply it if needed.
Cryotherapy
Another topical treatment for a wart is cryotherapy. For this treatment, liquid nitrogen is applied to the wart, causing it to freeze. The wart should then blister, dry up and fall off. The cryotherapy process may be somewhat painful, and so a local anesthetic may be applied first. Warts that are large or thick might need multiple applications of cryotherapy.
