Types Of Surgical Gloves

Surgeons wear sterilized surgical gloves to prevent the spread of germs.

Surgical gloves are much like doctors' examination gloves, except they are of higher quality and are more expensive. These gloves are worn to prevent the spread of germs or infection while the surgeon is performing an operation. They come sterilized and packaged in pairs. Surgical gloves are made of a variety of materials.

Latex Gloves

The latex glove, made from natural rubber latex, is a long-standing, popular choice. It provides excellent tactile sensitivity, allowing the surgeon to feel his way through the procedure. Latex also makes for a comfortable glove. They are also highly elastic, making them easy to put on. However, because an increasing number of people have latex sensitivities or allergies, alternatives are available.

Polyisoprene Gloves

If the surgeon or patient has a latex sensitivity, polyisoprene gloves are typically used. Polyisoprene is a synthetic material with a molecular structure very similar to that of rubber, except it does not contain the harmful protein in latex that causes a reaction in some. The characteristics and performance of polyisoprene gloves are similar to those made of latex. These gloves are the most expensive.

Neoprene Gloves

Another alternative to latex is neoprene, a more economical option than polyisoprene. Neoprene is also a synthetic material. It is often the choice for surgical gloves when latex is not an option. However, while it is a suitable substitute for latex in many respects, it is not as elastic. Like latex and polyisoprene gloves, neoprene gloves are available with a polymer coating on the inside to make donning the gloves easier.
