The Best Business School Essays

Business schools require written essays before students make it into the school.

Writing the best business school essays requires determining what is needed in the essay, what is redundant and what is irrelevant. Business schools look for the best candidates for their institutions and one of the methods to determine which students are ideal is through the admissions essay.

Read the Topic

The most important part of writing the best essay is staying on topic. If the essay topic asks a question such as "How will you diversify or contribute to our school?, a common question seen in business school applications, talking about your high school extracurricular activities will result in an unprofessional essay. Read through the topic carefully, then look at personal experiences, personality and abilities to determine what best fits the topic.

Organize Thoughts

Organization is a key point to writing the best essay possible. Take time to write bullet points which relate to the essay topic. Expand the bullet points into an outline to form an essay. This will minimize the risk of writing over the word count limit of a business essay and keep the information orderly and understandable.

Rough Draft

Write according to the outlined information and avoid counting words. Get the information on paper in a rough draft. Business essays require revision, so the first draft does not need to be perfect. Read the essay and determine if it answers the the topic. If a topic says "Why do you want an MBA?," the essay should only answer the reasons for going to an MBA program. If there are sentences, paragraphs or phrases which are off topic, cross them out. Look for grammar, spelling errors and fix any problems. Rewrite the essay with the changes and repeat the process. Several revisions are typically necessary to get the best business essay possible. Have someone else read the essay after you're done polishing it and offers suggestions for improvement.

Tips for Success

Business essays are concise and to the point. Avoid any run-on or complex sentences which can confuse readers. Also avoid using business jargon unless it is necessary. Use personal examples when writing business school essays. The schools want to know about the individual. "U.S. News and World Report" points out that students who write to a type of candidate they think schools want are giving the schools an inaccurate picture and potentially lowering their chances of getting into the school because it might make them look like a weaker candidate. Students should point out what makes them unique by sharing personal stories.
