Instructions To Sew A Blanket Stitch

The blanket stitch is used to finish off edges of fabric. It’s called the blanket stitch, because traditionally it’s used to edge blankets. This stitch is also used for handmade button holes and is often called the buttonhole stitch for this use. Today, the stitch is also used on clothing as an edging or for decorative purposes. In fact, it is part of the list of embroidery stitches found in many "how to" books and instructive materials.

Instructions

1. Cut a piece of floss, yarn or thread about 18 inches long. Thread it through the needle. Do not tie a knot at the end.

2. Secure the end of the thread by running it through several fabric threads at the back of the fabric. It should not show through to the front of the fabric.

3. Poke the point of the needle through the back to the front of the fabric at one stitch width to the left side. The width and height of the stitch is entirely up to your preference. Usually finer fabrics or smaller projects use a tighter stitch width and shorter stitch length than thicker fabrics or larger projects.

4. Pull the thread up and around the back of the point of the needle. Pull the needle all the way through the fabric. This will keep a line of thread along the edge of the fabric. Repeat the stitch to the end of the fabric.

5. Poke your needle directly across from the fabric point when you get to the corner. Make the stitch as usual. Continue the next side of the fabric in the same manner.
