Surgical technicians, also referred to as surgical technologists, assist surgeons in the operating room. The job duties for a surgical technician include sterilizing the room and the instruments, preparing the patient for surgery, preparing the operating room for surgery, handing instruments and other supplies to the surgeon, and cleaning and dismantling after surgery. The surgical technologist is also the person who is responsible for counting everything to ensure no instruments are left inside the patient. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for surgical technicians is expected to increase.

The Academy of Health Care Professionals offers financial aid to surgical technology students that qualify. There is also a career services department to assist graduates with finding a job as a surgical technologist once they have completed their program.
