Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop after a person has experienced a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, a natural disaster, a terrorist attack or military combat. Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, avoidance of possible triggers, emotional numbness or hyperarousal.
Flashbacks
People suffering from PTSD may suffer flashbacks and nightmares. These can be triggered by certain sights or sounds.
Avoidance
People with PTSD often avoid events or places that remind them of their traumatic experience. They may also resist talking about or remembering the experience.
Emotions
PTSD can lead to emotional numbness, depression or feelings of guilt.
Hyperarousal
People with PTSD might be always tense, easily startled or have angry outbursts. They may also have difficulty sleeping.
Effects
PTSD can also lead to substance abuse problems, difficulties in jobs and relationships and feelings of shame and despair.
