Running from Rusk, Texas to Palestine, Texas is the official railroad of the state. This East Texas attraction features different engines from a 1917 Baldwin Locomotive Works Engine 300 to a New York-built diesel engine from 1947.
History
The Texas State Railroad was established by the prison system in 1881. Crews of inmates constructed the line which stretches from Rusk to Palestine in 1909. In 2003, the railroad was designated as the Official Railroad of Texas. The railroad was run by Texas Parks and Wildlife until 2007, when American Heritage Railways took over operation.
Camping
The depot in Rusk has campgrounds to accommodate families and campers. The site is equipped with full hook up sites with water and electricity. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, grill and fire ring and has access to showers and restrooms. Campers can enjoy a fishing lake, playgrounds, sports facilities and a nature trail.
Special Events
The railroad hosts many special events throughout the year. During Christmas it offers a Polar Express ride, where children can hear the story of The Polar Express, meet Santa, and enjoy hot cocoa and a treat during the ride. It also hosts special rides for Halloween and Valentine's Day. The Day Out With Thomas ride is for children who are enthusiastic about the Thomas the Tank Engine television show. There is also a Little Engine That Could tour and an Annual Adrian Peterson Day.
Accomodations
The only hotel accommodations in Rusk is the 43-room Weston Inn and Suites. The hotel offers a microwave, cable TV, wireless Internet and large outdoor pool. Palestine has many options for accommodations. It has several hotels. For a historic feel, you can stay at one of the town's bed and breakfasts.
