A bariatric coordinator is an individual who is well-rounded. The position includes managing a staff, budgetary control, planning events, teaching and scheduling surgeries. Most hospitals now include bariatric group coordinators with their patient services. Most coordinators are RN's and have a M.S.N. or higher.
Management
Bariatric group coordinators manage several individuals and patients at a time. Within the group, the coordinator manages and conducts staff.
Budgetary Control
Although many Americans have bariatric surgery, funding is still an issue. Many doctors have separate hospital fees which drain and deplete hospital funds. Coordinators need to have excellent finance skills and judgment while handling their respective budgets.
Planning |Events
Support group meetings, informational meetings and parties are all part of a coordinator's job. Support groups and informational meetings are held 1 to 2 times per month. Parties or "class reunions," which are held annually, may include full dinners and award ceremonies. The annual "Walk from Obesity" also must be planned by the coordinator.
Teaching
A bariatric support group coordinator will share her knowledge with the patient. Pre-surgery education will help the patient lose weight and prepare for the surgery. Post surgery education will help the patient acclimate, relax and cope with his new found lifestyle. The group coordinator might even teach at an informational seminar.
Scheduling Surgeries
Most doctors work exclusively with several hospitals. The program coordinator is in charge of everything that goes on within the gastric program, including scheduling, lab tests and paperwork.
