What Happens If I Am Denied Health Insurance

Individuals denied health insurance have other coverage options.

There are several reasons for a health insurance denial. Individuals with pre-existing conditions are often denied health insurance or their illness is excluded from coverage. Whatever the reason for your denial, you have options that can help you and your family obtain coverage.

Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan

The federal government created a program which makes insurance available to individuals that have been denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition. The program "will provide a new health coverage option for you if you have been uninsured for at least six months, you have a pre-existing condition or have been denied health coverage because of your health condition," according to HealthCare.gov. By 2014, insurance companies will be prohibited from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.

Apply to Another Company

For whatever reason you are denied health insurance benefits, you may apply to as many health insurance companies that are available. Not all insurance companies have the same underwriting requirements. Applying to another company with different qualification requirements may allow you to be approved for coverage.

Consider Limited Indemnity Policies

A limited indemnity policy guarantees health coverage without exclusions to plan participants. Health benefits include but are not limited to wellness visits, emergency care, accidents and diagnostic testing.

Utilize Employer Benefits

It is unlawful for a group health insurance plan provided by an eligible employer to deny a plan participant health insurance coverage, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Seeking employment that provides health benefits is one way to possibly obtain coverage after a denial.
