What Are The Dangers Of Yerba Mate For Cancer

Yerba Mate Gourd

Yerba mate is a mixed drink containing the roasted leaves of the herb, Ilex paraguariensis and water. Yerba mate originated in South America and has become increasingly popular in the United States. A great deal of information has become available regarding the benefits and risks surrounding yerba mate. While the benefits of yerba mate are currently being debated, the dangers of yerba mate for cancer are supported by numerous studies.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Cancer

Carcinogen in the Blood

Recent studies have found that the drink yerba mate contains Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are classified as carcinogens, or cancer-causing agents. While many foods contain trace amounts of PAHs, trace amounts of PAHs are not considered a health risk. Yerba mate, however, contained enough PAHs to be compared with smoking one pack of cigarettes per day.

Stimulant Effect and Cancer

Stimulating Heart Activity

Yerba mate is a stimulant containing caffeine. When ingested in excess, caffeine can cause jitteriness and anxiety. In addition, high levels of caffeine can raise heart rate and blood pressure. A recent study at the University of San Francisco has linked cancer mortality with hypertension (high blood pressure).

Liver Disease and Cancer

Studies have shown that ingesting large quantities of yerba mate has adverse affects on the liver. The liver is extremely important in the detoxification of waste products in medications, including cancer medications. In addition, recent clinical studies have discovered a direct link between liver disease and the formation of cancer.
