Preparations For Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery is a major operation and must be treated as such. If you are in need of a hip replacement, you no doubt have already gone through treatments and therapies that have failed. The few weeks before your hip replacement is an important time to attend to details in preparation of your operation.

Lose Weight

As your doctor takes your medical history, he may ask you to lose some weight, if applicable. Excess weight puts more pressure on your joints and may slow down your recovery from hip replacement surgery.

Quit Smoking

Smoking can compromise your blood flow pattern, say experts from the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, and puts you at risk for more complications during surgery. Your physician may advise you to quit smoking before you schedule hip replacement surgery.

Blood Work

Be prepared to have routine blood tests done before your surgery. You may also have the opportunity to donate your own blood in case you need transfusions during your operation.

X-rays

Your doctor will most likely schedule you for a chest X-ray to be sure all is clear before you have your hip replacement.

Medications

The week before your hip replacement surgery is the time to stop taking medications that may interfere with healing. This includes non-steroidal inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. If you are taking other medications, ask your doctor if you need to discontinue use before surgery.

Insurance

Be sure to get your surgery approved by your insurance company before you head to the hospital for your hip replacement. Call the phone number on the back of your insurance card if you have questions about pre-authorization.

Home Improvements

Getting your home ready for your return is advised. Install grab bars in your bathtub and consider replacing your toilet seat with a raised seat that will be easier to use. Determine where you will sleep if you normally do not sleep on the ground floor of your home.
