Wisdom Tooth Nerve Pain

The removal of wisdom teeth can sometimes result in nerve pain if a nerve was pinched during the extraction process. In order to recover as quickly as possible, there are several steps that should be taken to relieve the pain.

Ice Packs

After the extraction process is over, put ice on the jaw covering the affected area. Leave it on for at least 20 minutes and do this three times a day for the first 48 hours. This will alleviate pain, reduce the swelling, and promote faster healing.

Considerations

You will likely receive two prescriptions from your dentist after the extraction process: a painkiller and an antibiotic to prevent infection. It is very important you take both of these as the dosage label recommends. This will help you manage pain and heal quickly.

Time Frame

Get plenty of rest after wisdom teeth have been removed. Sometimes, the painkiller your doctor prescribes will have a sedative effect and help you sleep. The recovery process could take anywhere from three to seven days depending on how many teeth were removed.

Soft Foods

Within the first couple of days of tooth extraction, eat soft, healthy foods. Soups, macaroni and cheese, yogurt, rice, cottage cheese, applesauce, and fruit smoothies are a good choice as they are less likely to aggravate nerve pain.

Warning

Do not engage in strenuous activity within the first few days as this cause the jaw to throb. Do not smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, or eat solid foods that may affect the nerves.
