Information About Braces For Kids

Children often find keeping braces clean and flossed more challenging than adults.

Typically kids get braces, if needed, when the majority of the adult teeth have come in, and they are often referred to an Orthodontist for consultation by their family dentist. In cases where there is a bite problem or other more serious dental alignment issue, younger children may receive an earlier referral. While children are often concerned with braces being uncomfortable they are typically more uncomfortable for adults. The mild discomfort caused by periodic band adjustments and tightening can easily be eliminated with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Function

Braces use a combination of pressure and alignment to move teeth out of their old position and into a new and more desirable position. They can correct misalignments that include over- and under-bites as well as crooked teeth. Braces can be worn for different amounts of time depending upon the type and severity of the tooth problem. However, it is typical for patients to wear braces for about a 2-year period. After removal of the braces, patients frequently require some kind of a retainer to be worn periodically to prevent the teeth from moving back out of alignment.

Options

Today there are more options for braces then there were years ago. While the traditional metal brackets and wires are still a popular and effective option, invisible braces and lingual braces (braces with brackets that go behind the teeth) are becoming more prevalent. In addition, porcelain braces offer options in appearance, comfort and convenience that make their slightly higher cost worth considering. Since porcelain veneer brackets are smoother than metal they don't scrape the inside of the mouth uncomfortably and their smooth surface means they can be removed and adjusted easily whenever needed. In addition, porcelain versions come in a variety of color choices, including clear.

Cost

Braces for kids can range in price from $1800 to $3200, depending on the type of braces you choose. Porcelain and invisible braces are typically more expensive than traditional metal brackets and wires. However, if the clearer appearance is important, mixing traditional braces on either the top or the bottom teeth (whichever are less visible) and invisible braces on the more visible teeth is also an option.

Insurance coverage

Because braces are considered a cosmetic treatment very few insurance plans cover the bulk of the cost, even for children. According to Bracesreviews.com HMO plans typically cover a larger portion of braces treatment than other plans. However, if the braces are needed to correct a severe underbite or overbite that affects eating, speaking or the function of the jaw, some insurance companies will cover a greater majority of the treatment. It's also possible to purchase separate braces insurance that will cover a large part of the cost.
