Male breast enlargement is a condition that affects more males every single year. Whether caused by rapid weight gain or a medical condition known as gynecomastia, male breast enlargement can be an uncomfortable, embarrassing situation for boys and men alike. A balanced diet and regular exercise can help males to reduce their chances of developing enlarged breasts, but many other factors, some which are unknown, can also cause this condition to occur. If natural remedies cease to work, surgical options are available to restore normal shape.
Types
There are two types of male breast enlargement: excess fatty tissue and a condition known as gynecomastia. Excess fatty tissue is often caused by puberty and excessive weight gain. Gynecomastia is a medical condition that results in the formation of firm breast tissue in men, in one or both breasts; this condition has several possible causes.
Identification
Male breast enlargement in the form of gynecomastia results in the development of firm breast tissue directly below the nipple; this tissue can cause tenderness in the breast area. Male breast enlargement in the form of excess fatty tissue also results in tissue formation directly beneath the nipple, but it is not firm in nature and does not cause physical pain.
Size
Breast tissue due to gynecomastia is directly beneath the nipple and usually no more than about 1 1/2 inches across. Excess fatty tissue in the breast area has no limit to size; this is usually proportionate to the amount of weight gained.
Time Frame
Breast enlargement in the form of excess fatty tissue usually occurs in boys going through puberty. This can also happen to males at any age who experience rapid, excessive weight gain. Excess fatty tissue will remain until diet and exercise are used to remedy it. Gynecomastia is a condition that can affect any male at any age. The firm breast tissue can only be removed through surgery.
Misconceptions
It is common among young boys and teens to believe they have gynecomastia, when it is really just excess fatty tissue in the breast area. A visit to your physician will allow the exact problem to be determined.
Prevention/Solution
To prevent male breast enlargement, men can maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise. In addition, they can refrain from using drugs such as marijuana, anabolic steroids and prescription drugs and be tested regularly for tumors or disease. If male breast enlargement persists, breast reduction surgery is an option.
