Lap Bands & Pregnancy

The Lap Band can be adjusted to give pregnant women additional abdominal room.

The Lap Band system has been used by men and women in the U.S. since 2001 to help lose weight where diet and exercise have failed. With proper management, the Lap Band is safe to use during pregnancy.

Function

Laparoscopy is used to install an adjustable silicone gastric band (known as a Lap Band) around the upper part of the stomach. This constricts the stomach, making it harder for a person to overeat.

Warning

It is recommended for women to avoid getting pregnant within one year of having the Lap Band implanted, since this is the time when the most weight loss occurs. While the child is not in danger, pregnancy can counteract the positive effects of the Lap Band.

Benefits

The Lap Band is adjustable, meaning that it can be loosened to allow a pregnant woman more room if she needs to eat additional food while pregnant or needs additional comfort.

Effects

Losing weight through a Lap Band improves a woman's health during pregnancy--obesity while pregnant can lead to issues such as diabetes. Obesity is also a consideration when dealing with infertility.

Considerations

Additional nutritional supplements such as iron, calcium and folic acid may be required for pregnant women with Lap Bands.
