Is It Possible To Repair A Laptop With A Broken Screen

A cracked laptop screen can be replaced.

Broken laptops screens can be scary. One inadvertent fall and your business records, schoolwork and photo album just turned into an expensive paperweight. Fortunately, laptop screens are cheaper to replace than a whole laptop, and you can install them yourself. The first step is to troubleshoot the problem and make sure it isn't just a loose cable. If the screen itself is the broken all you need to do is order a new one and install it. You will be up and running in no time.

Instructions

1. Use the laptop's VGA port to troubleshoot the problem

Plug your laptop into an external monitor to see if the damage is limited to the screen. Do this by plugging a compatible monitor into the laptop's VGA port and turning the laptop on. If the laptop loads normally, than the screen is the problem. If nothing happens or you get the same results, then the damage may include the hard disk or motherboard and you will need to seek help from a computer professional.

2. Remove the front bezel from your laptop. The bezel is the cover that makes up the perimeter of the laptop screen. It will be held in place by several small screws. Open the laptop all the way and carefully remove the screws and place them somewhere safe. Gently remove the bezel.

3. Lay a piece of clean cloth over your keyboard. Carefully tilt the screen forward and lay it on the cloth. Unplug the video cable, which looks like a flat ribbon, and the power cable, which will be at the base of the screen. The screen should be completely free now.

4. Purchase a replacement screen. Check the part number on the back of your screen and contact a supplier. You may either purchase from the company that made your computer or you can buy what is called an OEM part. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacture. Many computer parts are made in the same three factories in Asia. Generally, the OEM parts are available at a significant discount.

5. Install the new screen. Set the cloth over the keyboard and lay the new screen face down on it. Plug the video cable and power cables in. Gently tilt the new screen into place. Remount the bezel and secure it with the screws. Insert the laptop's battery and plug in the charger. Turn on your computer.
