Lapband Port Problems

Weight loss surgery can have a wonderful impact on someone who is overweight. It can improve your life and your health. One weight loss option is the lap band. This is a "banding system" that helps you decrease your weight by limiting the amount of food that you can eat.

Problems

Many issues may arise after you have the Lap Band surgery. One of these issues involves the port. Some of these issues include a flipped port, an extremely angled port and port leak. The issues are fixed with minor surgery.

Flipped Port

A flipped port occurs in about two percent of all Lap Band surgeries. This occurs when the stitches that hold the port pop and the port flips backwards. This is a simple issue that is corrected by out-patient surgery. In the out-patient surgery, the doctor goes into the port space and reattaches the port to the abdomen wall with stitches.

Angled Port

An angled port occurs when the port slightly moves to one side or the other. This makes it difficult to access the port to do the fillings. If a port is believed to be angled, the doctor will x-ray your abdomen to find out for sure where the port is angled. The also is corrected with out-patient surgery.

Port Leak

A port leak of the Lap Band happens when the person begins to feel less restriction or a change in the restriction. This can happen suddenly or over time. According to arturorodriguezmd.com, if there is a port leak, the band will not be able to be filled correctly and work against eating too much. This is also corrected by out-patient surgery.

Warnings

You may experience different symptoms after you have the Lap Band surgery. However, If you experience port issues, you should contact your doctor right away. There is no way to know if the symptoms are normal or not, and therefore a doctor should exam the area to diagnosis you and give you the proper options to correct any port issues.
