Cancer that forms in the tissues lining the stomach is gastric cancer. There are five different types of stomach cancer.
Adenocarcinoma
The most common type of stomach cancer is adenocarcinoma. Out of 100 cases of stomach cancer, 95 are adenocarcinomas. This cancer begins in the gland cells of the innermost lining in the stomach.
Lymphoma
Lymphoma is also called MALT lymphoma or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. They are solid tumors and are the second most common type of stomach cancer.
Leiomyosarcoma
Leiomyosarcoma is cancer that begins in the smooth muscle cells in the walls of the stomach. This cancer grows uncontrollably and forms tumors.
Gastrointestinal Stomal Tumors
Gastrointestinal stomal tumors are the third most common type of stomach cancer. This slow growing cancer begins in the muscles of the stomach.
Carcinoid
Carcinoid cancers begin to grow in the tissues that produce hormones in the digestive system. Carcinoids release chemicals or hormones into the blood stream and cause symptoms to appear in other parts of the body.
