Tools For Cutting A Cement Board

Cement board is a type of drywall construction that is designed to go underneath or on the walls of wet areas. It is commonly put down as a subfloor in a kitchen, bathroom or laundry room. Cement board is waterproof and is a composition of gypsum and cement. Does this Spark an idea?

Drywall Saw

A drywall saw will cut through this type of board very well. It also has the advantage of helping you to more easily cut holes in the wall. The saw is good for straight edges that meet in corners.

Razor Knife

You can score the surface of the board with a razor knife, and then the unwanted piece can be broken off. A couple of quick passes with the knife, leaving a groove about 1/8-inch thick, will allow you to snap the piece off over a solid surface, giving a clean edge.

Jigsaw

Jigsaws have the advantage of speed and maneuverability. Using a jigsaw will allow you to cut large quantities of the cement board quickly. You can also perform some turns but not extremely tight turns. The jigsaw is a handy tool when remodeling a large room, such as a pool house or mud room.

Dremel Tool

These tools are handheld routers that can be used to smooth rough edges. They also will allow you to make very precise holes in the board for pipes or venting. The dremel tool uses a small rotating bit that resembles a drill bit but that has the cutting edges on the side of the bit.
