Relief From Back Muscle Spasms

Muscle spasms are one the primary causes of back pain. They occur when the muscle contracts involuntarily. Typically, muscle spasms are treated with hot or cold compresses, exercise and medications.

Hot and Cold Compresses

Muscle spasms may be relieved by using a heating pad for a 30-minute session. Also, taking a warm bath may help. Muscle spasms may also be relieved by ice packs. Some individuals may get better relief from either hot or cold treatments while others may want to alternate between the two.

Back Stretches and Exercises

Back stretches and exercises can strengthen the back and reduce the occurrence of back spasms. To stretch the back, lie on a flat surface with the knees bent and pillow under the head. Hold onto one leg and pull the knee towards the chest; hold the leg in this position for five seconds. Then, do the same thing with the other leg. Repeat until each knee has been pulled toward the chest 10 times.

A good back exercise to increase flexibility is performed by lying on the floor with the knees bent with both feet flat on the floor. While in this position, arch the back in such a way that it feels as though the pubic bone is directed toward the feet. Hold in this position for five seconds and then relax. Afterward, tilt the pubic bone towards your head and hold again for five seconds. Repeat this exercise 10 to 15 times.

The bridge exercise is another good option for increasing back strength. This exercise also starts off on the floor with the knees bend and feet on the floor. While lying on the floor, raise the the hips to create a line straight line extending from the knees to the shoulders. Hold the position while inhaling and exhaling deeply three times. Repeat this exercise about 10 to 15 times.

Medications

Over-the-counter medications, such as Tylenol, Aleve and Motrin may, also be used to treat muscle spasms. These medications may help to alleviate pain and swelling associated with the spasms. Prescription muscle relaxers, such as Soma, Flexeril and Valium, may be needed if muscle spasms occur on a regular basis.
